A bomb!
They had just finished supper when a police car raced into the yard with flashing lights and screaming sirens. Daniel opened the door.
„All stay inside,“ a policeman shouted to him.
„Pardon?“ Daniel asked.
„A moment ago a man on his walk observed two men fiddling about at the back of the stable. Since you repeatedly received anonymous threats over the last few days we better take a look and check whether everything is alright.“
The policemen crossed over to the stable. Daniel shut the door. They all watched through the window. After a while one of the officers came back and went over to the police car. He spoke into the radio. A few minutes later there was the sound of a siren and a fire engine came racing around the corner.
„I really want to know now what’s going on!“ Daniel said and approached the policeman. They talked for a short while. Then Daniel came back to the house. He was pale. „A bomb! They actually wanted to blow up the stable! The police found the bomb beneath the feed trough which is in the back.“
„What’s happening now?“ Miguel asked.
„They are waiting for a specialist to arrive from town. He has to deactivate the bomb.“
„We have to get the animals out of the stable!“ said Katie.
„That’s not possible. The bomb could blow up at the tiniest vibration. You would put the animals in danger even more. We can only hope for the best.“
„And pray,“ said Maria.
Waiting appeared to be endless to the children. Finally, it was already past 11 at night, the good news came. „The bomb is deactivated,“ one of the officers told them. „Just in time. It was set to go off in one hour, at midnight. You can go and sleep calmly , children. One of our units will stay here.”
Relieved they all hugged each other.
„Can we still sleep at the animals?“ Maria asked
„With the animals,“ Tom corrected her.
„Okay,“ Katie said. „As long as you get some sleep before tomorrow morning.“
Completely exhausted the children fell asleep straight away. This time they were not woken up by the noises the animals made in their sleep. Neither by Lucky barking again. He barked, because the jeep was approaching again. However, the men with the sunglasses did not expect the police already waiting for them. They were so surprised, that they did not resist when they were arrested.
